The National Universities Commission (NUC) has officially licensed the Ebonyi State University of Aeronautics and Aerospace Engineering, Ezza, Ebonyi State, making it the 300th university in Nigeria and the 69th state-owned institution in the country.
At a formal ceremony in Abuja, NUC Executive Secretary Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu described the approval as a “historic milestone,” highlighting Ebonyi State’s commitment to educational advancement, technological innovation, and youth empowerment.

“This is not just about adding to the number of universities, but about creating a world-class institution that will drive research, innovation, and industry collaboration in the aerospace sector,” Ribadu stated.
The new university, the third state-owned in Ebonyi after Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki (established in 1999) and Ebonyi State University of ICT, Science, and Technology, will focus on aeronautics and aerospace engineering. It aims to address Nigeria’s growing demand for local expertise in aviation and related technologies.
Prof. Ribadu emphasized the importance of academic integrity, adherence to the NUC’s Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS), and strong collaboration with industry leaders. The university is expected to offer programmes in aerospace, automotive, mechatronics, and 26 related fields.
He also assured that key stakeholders such as the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and the National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) would be duly notified of the new institution.
Representing Governor Francis Nwifuru, Deputy Governor Patricia Obila expressed gratitude for the approval, stating that the university would drive job creation, skill development, and national competitiveness in engineering and aviation.
“We have been tested and have passed all requirements. This certificate enables us to move forward and contribute meaningfully to education,” she said.
Governor Nwifuru reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to quality education, pledging that the new university would serve as a model for excellence in both structure and academic standards. He highlighted ongoing efforts to send students abroad and across Nigeria for training, aiming to alleviate hardship and foster innovation through education.
The establishment of the Ebonyi State University of Aeronautics and Aerospace Engineering is set to position the state as a hub for technological growth and international relevance in the sector.
