NIPCO Expands CNG Footprint in Delta with New Asaba,Warri Stations

​ASABA — In a strategic move to cushion the impact of rising petrol prices, NIPCO Gas Limited has officially commissioned two ultra-modern Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations in Asaba and Warri, Delta State.

​The expansion, unveiled on Wednesday, marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s transition toward cheaper, cleaner energy under the Presidential CNG Initiative (Pi-CNG). The new facilities are designed to provide a high-capacity supply of natural gas to motorists, particularly commercial transporters who have been hardest hit by the removal of the fuel subsidy.

​A Buffer Against Inflation

​Representing Governor Sheriff Oborevwori at the ceremony in Asaba, the Secretary to the State Government, Kingsley Emu, hailed the project as a vital economic intervention. He noted that the availability of CNG in the state would directly lower the cost of transportation, which is a primary driver of food and service inflation.

​”The establishment of these stations is a direct response to the economic realities faced by our citizens,” Emu stated. “By providing a cost-effective alternative to Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), we are easing the pressure on household incomes and supporting the federal government’s energy diversification agenda.”

​The Governor further pledged that Delta State would facilitate the establishment of conversion workshops and technical training centers to ensure that local mechanics and engineers can safely transition vehicles from petrol to gas.

​Transport Sector “Game-Changer”

​The Delta State Commissioner for Transport, Onoriode Agofure, described the arrival of NIPCO’s infrastructure as a “game-changer” for the local economy. He emphasized that the lower operating costs for commercial drivers would eventually translate to reduced fares for commuters.

​”We are looking at improved profitability for logistics businesses and a cleaner environment for our cities,” Agofure added, noting that Delta is positioning itself as a leader in the South-South energy transition.

​NIPCO Gas Limited’s Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Sanjay Tarat, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to deepening gas penetration across Nigeria. He explained that NIPCO’s investment strategy is focused on enhancing national energy security by utilizing the country’s vast domestic gas reserves.

​”These stations are not just fuel points; they are enablers of economic activity,” Tarat said. “Our goal is to reduce the nation’s dependence on imported fuels while promoting environmental stewardship through reduced carbon emissions.”

​With the Asaba and Warri stations now operational, NIPCO continues to solidify its partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited to deploy 35 CNG stations across the country, providing a much-needed lifeline for the Nigerian transport sector.
