Samuel Eweni, a 75-year-old Nigerian professor of computer sciences at Southern University at New Orleans, was fatally stabbed by his son, Chukwuebuka Eweni, in their home on Pebble Drive on the night of Tuesday, November 13, 2025. During the attack, Chukwuebuka also stabbed his two sisters, who survived—one has since been released from the hospital, while the other remains in treatment with expected recovery.
Family members confirmed that Chukwuebuka had long suffered from mental illness, though he had never exhibited violent behavior before. The evening had been ordinary, and it remains unclear what triggered the sudden assault. After the attack, Chukwuebuka voluntarily went to New Orleans East Hospital, where he routinely sought mental health treatment. Unaware of the crime, hospital staff transferred him to a Jefferson Parish facility, where police later took him into custody on Wednesday morning.
The New Orleans Police Department charged Chukwuebuka with second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder. Authorities described the case as a tragic domestic incident affecting the family profoundly.
Southern University at New Orleans expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Dr. Eweni. Chancellor Dr. Joseph Bouie Jr. remembered him as more than an educator—also a mentor and guiding light to many students. Dr. Eweni’s significant contributions to the College of Business and Public Administration and the university’s mission of transforming lives through education will be honored and cherished.
This tragic event has left a community in mourning as they reflect on the life and legacy of a beloved professor whose commitment to education impacted many. The family and colleagues are receiving support as investigations and legal proceedings continue .
