Abuja, Nigeria – A Nigerian lady, known as “The Ekeh’s” on Facebook, has issued a poignant appeal to Nigerians back home, urging them to reconsider their expectations of family members living abroad and to appreciate any financial support they receive. Her message comes as many Nigerians often assume that those in Western countries are living lives of immense abundance, making them targets for constant financial requests.
In a detailed post that has resonated with many, The Ekeh’s meticulously outlined the significant expenses faced by an average family in Canada, illustrating how even a seemingly substantial monthly income can quickly be depleted.
She painted a scenario of a couple in Canada, where the husband earns $20+ per hour and the wife earns $30 per hour. Based on a 40-hour work week for both, this translates to a combined monthly income of approximately $5,600.
However, The Ekeh’s broke down how this amount is swiftly consumed by essential bills:
1.Rent: A major expenditure, ranging from $1,800 to $2,500 monthly, or even more depending on location and property size.

2.Utilities: Hundreds of dollars are spent on electricity, heating (critical in Canada’s climate), internet, and mobile phone bills.
3.Food: Grocery bills alone can consume $600 to $1,000 or more monthly, especially for families with children.
4.Childcare: For families with young children, daycare costs can be a significant burden, with some paying between $800 to over $1,200 per child each month.
“By the time these bills are paid, that $5,600 looks a lot smaller,” she emphasized, adding that these figures don’t even account for other necessary expenses such as transportation, car insurance, clothing, school supplies, emergency funds, or personal care. She also highlighted that many families are also burdened with loan repayments or mortgages, which can make their expenses even higher than rent.
The Ekeh’s urged Nigerians to shift their perspective, asking, “Before you ask what they’ve sent or why the money isn’t enough, ask yourself how are they even managing to do what they’re doing?” She stressed that many Nigerians abroad are not living glamorous lives but are often working tirelessly, sometimes juggling multiple shifts and sacrificing their well-being, simply to meet their responsibilities and support loved ones back home.
“Let us stop measuring the value of someone’s love and effort by how much money they send,” she pleaded. “If you have a family member abroad who still supports loved ones back home, even if it’s once in a while, you don’t know the magnitude of the blessing you’ve received.”
Her message concluded with a powerful call for gratitude, prayers, and words of encouragement, asserting that “every dollar sent came at a cost. And that kind of love is priceless.” The post serves as a crucial reminder of the unseen sacrifices made by the Nigerian diaspora and the need for greater empathy from those at home.
