Nigerian Husband of Deputy Mayor Arrested in Guesthouse Raid

​BLOEMFONTEIN – In an operation that has sent shockwaves through the local political landscape, South African authorities have detained Phil Odili, a Nigerian national and husband of Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality’s Deputy Executive Mayor, Lulama Titi Odili. The detention follows a high-profile police raid on his Bloemfontein guesthouse, which uncovered nearly 30 allegedly undocumented foreign nationals.

​Free State Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae confirmed the dramatic multi-agency operation, stating it has sparked a sweeping police and immigration investigation.

​According to authorities, law enforcement officers discovered between 28 and 29 individuals tucked away inside the hospitality establishment. Preliminary findings indicate that the cooperative hideout had been active for at least a week, with the individuals staying strictly indoors to avoid public detection.

​”It’s a guesthouse where we had about 28 to 29 people that were arrested because they were hiding in this place,” Letsoha-Mathae revealed, noting the coordinated nature of the operation. “We’re told that it’s about seven days that they’ve been hiding in this place. There is someone who’s coming in bringing some foodstuffs for them.”

​A Twisted Paper Trail

​The raid took an even more complicated turn as investigators began sifting through documentation on the premises.

​According to Letsoha-Mathae, officers recovered a Nigerian passport alongside the South African identity document and official death certificate of a deceased South African woman. Furthermore, investigators are probing how a visa linked to the deceased woman managed to be processed and issued after her recorded passing.

​”This person is having a Nigerian passport but is in possession of a death certificate of a South African woman and an ID of a South African woman,” the Premier remarked, highlighting the sophisticated immigration fraud currently being targeted by detectives.

​Heightened Tensions and Ongoing Probes

​The high-stakes raid unfolds against a backdrop of intensified immigration enforcement and public friction regarding undocumented nationals across South Africa. Preliminary police reports suggest the detained occupants include nationals from Nigeria and Ethiopia.

​While Odili has been taken into police custody and moved to a nearby station, formal charges have not yet been finalized.

​”The husband is not yet being charged. He’ll be transported to the nearest police station. We’ll know later today what charges he’ll be facing,” Letsoha-Mathae stated.

​The Mangaung Metro Municipality has not yet released an official statement regarding the implications of the raid on Deputy Executive Mayor Lulama Titi Odili’s office. Police maintain that investigations are fluid and ongoing.
