​Monaco Bombing: Sanctioned Ukrainian Billionaire and Family Critically Injured in Targeted Attack

​An unprecedented parcel bomb attack has shattered the quiet luxury of the Mediterranean microstate of Monaco, leaving a controversial Ukrainian-born tycoon and his wife in critical condition.

​The blast, which occurred just before 9:00 p.m. local time on Monday night, June 29, targeted multi-millionaire property developer Vadym Yermolaiev and his family as they returned to their ground-floor flat in a residential building on rue Révérend-Père-Louis-Frolla, near the French border.

​The Attack and the Casualties

​According to Monaco’s Prosecutor General, Stéphane Thibault, an unidentified male suspect left a backpack or parcel containing a shrapnel-filled explosive device in the entryway of the building. The bomb detonated the exact moment Yermolaiev, his partner, and their 13-year-old son entered the lobby.

​The explosive device was packed with bolts and buckshot, designed specifically to maximize casualties.
