An unprecedented parcel bomb attack has shattered the quiet luxury of the Mediterranean microstate of Monaco, leaving a controversial Ukrainian-born tycoon and his wife in critical condition.
The blast, which occurred just before 9:00 p.m. local time on Monday night, June 29, targeted multi-millionaire property developer Vadym Yermolaiev and his family as they returned to their ground-floor flat in a residential building on rue Révérend-Père-Louis-Frolla, near the French border.
The Attack and the Casualties
According to Monaco’s Prosecutor General, Stéphane Thibault, an unidentified male suspect left a backpack or parcel containing a shrapnel-filled explosive device in the entryway of the building. The bomb detonated the exact moment Yermolaiev, his partner, and their 13-year-old son entered the lobby.
The explosive device was packed with bolts and buckshot, designed specifically to maximize casualties.
- Vadym Yermolaiev: The 50-to-60-year-old real estate magnate remains in critical, life-threatening condition at a hospital in neighboring Nice.
- His Wife/Partner: Also in her 50s or 60s, she sustained catastrophic injuries; witnesses reported she suffered severed feet and severe blood loss.
- Their Son: The couple’s 13-year-old son sustained less severe injuries and is being treated at a children’s hospital in Nice.
- Bystanders: Four additional people were treated by emergency services for shock and minor cuts from windows shattered by the violent detonation.
Unprecedented Breach of Security
Monaco is internationally renowned for its intense security apparatus and exceptionally low crime rates. The incident has sent profound shockwaves through the elite principality.
Monaco’s head of state, Prince Albert II, cut short a trip to Germany to return home, releasing a statement condemning the bombing as an “odious act” that has shocked the entire Monégasque community.
”More than ever, the Principality of Monaco will remain united and determined in the face of violence and crime,” Prince Albert II declared. “The security of our community has always been a priority; it will remain so more than ever, whatever the threats.”
Monaco’s Minister of State, Christophe Mirmand, emphasized the historical anomaly of the event. “To my knowledge, this is the first time in history that such an act has taken place in the principality,” Mirmand told reporters. He added that surveillance footage clearly indicates the family was intentionally watched and targeted, with the suspect seen pacing the area prior to the explosion.
The Manhunt and Investigation
A massive joint security operation involving Monégasque and French authorities is currently underway. CCTV footage captured the suspect—described as wearing a dark top, a bucket hat, white jeans, and trainers—fleeing on foot across the open border into the neighboring French town of Beausoleil.
While early government statements vacillated on the nature of the crime, Prosecutor General Thibault clarified on Tuesday morning that the case is formally being treated as an attempted murder investigation, rather than an act of terrorism.
Who is Vadym Yermolaiev?
Yermolaiev, originally from the south-central Ukrainian city of Dnipro, built a massive fortune via the Alef Group, a conglomerate spanning real estate, construction, and commercial property. He was previously ranked by Forbes as one of Ukraine’s 100 wealthiest individuals, with a net worth estimated at $220 million in 2021.
However, Yermolaiev has long maintained a contentious relationship with Kyiv:

- Citizenship: He renounced his Ukrainian citizenship in 2019 in favor of a Cypriot passport, citing a desire for “international protection” against what he termed an flawed Ukrainian judicial and tax system.
- Sanctions: In December 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy placed Yermolaiev under official sanctions. Kyiv alleged the tycoon maintained lucrative business links—specifically in the alcohol and beverage sector—within Russian-occupied territories, including Crimea.
Yermolaiev has previously denied collaborating with Moscow, pointing out that his private jet was destroyed by a Russian missile strike on Dnipro airport early in the 2022 invasion. Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed it has established contact with Monégasque authorities regarding the incident as the international manhunt continues.
