In a remarkable story of resilience and faith, Chinwe Ani Onu, a Nigerian woman, has shared how she and her family overcame daunting obstacles to relocate from Nigeria to the United Kingdom and become homeowners in less than two years.
A Journey Marked by Sacrifice
Chinwe arrived in the UK on October 4, 2022, on a student visa, leaving behind her husband and four young sons, all under the age of five. The emotional toll was immense—her youngest was just over two months old, and she had to abruptly end breastfeeding to make the move. Despite grief, anxiety, and guilt, Chinwe pressed on, motivated by her children’s future.
Within days of her arrival, she secured a part-time job and completed care/mental health support worker training. However, bringing her family over proved to be a formidable challenge. The process involved:

- Securing passports for all family members
- Raising millions of naira for proof of funds and health surcharges
- Navigating the UK’s competitive housing market while living in shared accommodation
Family Reunited, New Hurdles Faced
In April 2023, Chinwe returned to Nigeria to bring her family to the UK, as her husband could not travel alone with four young children. After overcoming flight booking issues, the family arrived in the UK on April 26, 2023, staying in an Airbnb before moving into a two-bedroom flat. Securing the flat required her husband to submit employment documents from Nigeria, and the landlord held the property for over a month until his right to rent could be verified.
Choosing Faith Over Uncertainty

Despite advice to the contrary and concerns about leaving stable employment in Nigeria, Chinwe was determined not to switch to a costly and temporary Post Study Work visa. Instead, she trusted in finding a job with sponsorship—and within days of settling in, she landed such a role. This came just before a change in immigration law that would have made her ineligible to switch visas before completing her course.
The new job was two hours away by car, forcing Chinwe to commute long distances several times a week for months. Relocating again meant finding new schools for the children and enduring the stress of repeated applications.
Triumph Over Adversity

Relocating with four young children brought its own set of struggles, including childcare challenges and a social services case that nearly resulted in the children being taken away. Despite numerous housing rejections, the family made a bold decision: to buy a home. With the help of a mortgage broker and solicitor, and after rigorous financial scrutiny, they secured a newly built property.
In less than 20 months since Chinwe’s arrival—and just 14 months after her family joined her—the Onu family became homeowners in the UK.

A Message of Hope
Chinwe’s story is a testament to perseverance, faith, and the power of community support. She encourages others facing immigration stress, family separation, or financial hurdles not to give up, reminding readers that every struggle has a purpose and that the impossible can become possible.
Her journey echoes the experiences of many Nigerian families seeking better opportunities abroad, highlighting both the challenges and the triumphs that come with starting anew in a foreign land.
