Accra, Ghana – Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju tragically died after collapsing during a fight at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra on Saturday night. The incident has brought to light disturbing allegations of a pre-arranged fight and a heated monetary dispute between the boxer and the organizers.

Olanrewaju was competing against Ghanaian boxer John Mbanugu, also known as “Power.” His death has shocked the boxing community and raised serious questions about the safety and ethical standards of boxing events.
The incident occurred on March 29 during a fight at the Bukom Boxing Arena. Olanrewaju collapsed in the ring and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
According to Mr. Oluremi Aboderin, the General Secretary of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBC), a dispute arose during the weigh-in session. Olanrewaju was allegedly informed by the organizers that the fight was pre-arranged for him to lose.
Aboderin stated that Olanrewaju demanded an additional $500 USD to agree to lose the fight willingly. When the organizers were unwilling to meet his demand, a heated exchange ensued.
Olanrewaju and his coach initially decided to leave, but they returned after receiving a call from the event organizers, who apparently agreed to the extra payment. The fight proceeded, with the tragic outcome of Olanrewaju’s death.
Olanrewaju’s death has prompted calls for investigations into the circumstances surrounding the event, with many questioning the role of event organizers, particularly regarding the alleged pre-arranged nature of the fight.
The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has confirmed Olanrewaju’s death and pledged to cooperate with investigations.

Olanrewaju’s death underscores the need for more stringent regulations and oversight in boxing, particularly in Africa. Authorities must prioritize the safety of fighters and ensure that fights are conducted fairly and without manipulation. There must be a comprehensive approach to regulating the sport, including transparent weigh-ins, proper medical checks, and accountability for pre-arranged matches.
