LONDON — The United Kingdom government has implemented updates to its Student visa guidelines, officially exempting citizens from several African and international nations from submitting upfront proof of funds during their initial application phase.
Under the revised “differential evidence requirement,” eligible applicants from countries such as Botswana, Mauritius, and Tunisia can bypass the mandatory attachment of financial documents when lodging their papers. However, immigration authorities emphasize that the policy functions strictly as a documentary waiver rather than a blanket exemption from the financial prerequisites themselves.
UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) retains full legal authority to demand financial documentation or audit accounts at any point before a final determination is reached. Applicants are legally bound to meet all fiscal benchmarks and are strongly advised to keep verifiable funds ready upon request.
The broader international roster benefiting from this pathway features nations spanning multiple continents, including Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, and the United Arab Emirates.
Exclusion of Nigerian Applicants
Notably absent from the relaxed documentary framework is Nigeria. Prospective scholars from Nigeria remain subject to standard compliance checks, meaning they must proactively furnish complete financial proof alongside their initial Student visa submissions.
For applicants mandated to present financial evidence, strict adherence to capital thresholds is required. Students must demonstrate possession of enough capital to cover one full academic year of tuition—as detailed on their Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)—alongside corresponding living allowances.
Escalated Living Cost Thresholds
The financial baseline follows adjustments introduced by the Home Office, which raised mandatory maintenance thresholds for international students.
Under current guidelines, students pursuing education within Inner and Outer London must verify monthly living funds of £1,529 for up to nine months. Conversely, individuals studying outside the capital are evaluated against a benchmark of £1,171 per month over the same timeframe.
This structure sets maximum maintenance caps at £13,761 for London-based institutions and £10,539 for regional universities, exclusive of tuition costs. Additionally, international students who have maintained continuous legal residence in the UK on a valid visa for a minimum of 12 consecutive months prior to their application are automatically exempt from proving maintenance funds.
