The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a comprehensive Teacher Ethics and Criminal Record Verification Framework to enhance professionalism and accountability in the education sector across public and private schools. Spearheaded by Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, the initiative mandates that all teachers undergo thorough background checks before employment, ensuring that only individuals of sound moral character and verified qualifications are entrusted with educating the nation’s future generations.
This innovative framework will be integrated into the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) digital portal, unveiled recently to digitalize teacher registration, licensing, and monitoring. The portal enables real-time access to teacher records, streamlines the recruitment process, and combats impersonation, certificate forgery, and employment of unqualified personnel. Additional features include AI-powered lesson planning tools and a revamped Professional Qualifying Examination focused on core teaching competencies such as mathematics, literacy, and pedagogy.
Dr. Ronke Soyombo, TRCN Registrar, emphasized the portal’s role in supporting professional development and maintaining high ethical standards through state-level investigation panels addressing teacher misconduct. This digital transformation marks a significant step in restoring integrity to the teaching profession and improving educational outcomes nationwide.
The initiative aligns with broader government efforts under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to revitalize education through community participation, teacher training, and infrastructure improvements. The framework not only promises to safeguard the quality of education but also reflects Nigeria’s commitment to embracing modern technology and innovation in public service .
