Nigeria, Italy announce $5bn partnership at UN General Assembly

NEW YORK — On the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly, Nigeria and Italy have announced a sweeping $5 billion cooperation agreement.

This marks one of the most significant bilateral deals to emerge from this year’s gathering of world leaders and capping months of warming ties between Abuja and Rome.

Nigeria and Italy had separately been reported to be partnering on a $5 billion global education campaign, suggesting today’s UNGA announcement may fold several strands of cooperation into one broader package.

Findings show that Italy’s engagement with Africa more broadly has leaned heavily on an energy-for-migration-cooperation model, epitomised by Rome’s 2024 Italy-Africa Summit investment plan worth over $5.9 billion continent-wide.

Nigeria’s own bilateral slice appears to extend that template, likely spanning energy infrastructure, education and economic development, though full sectoral details are expected to emerge as both governments formalise the agreement’s terms.

A signal for Nigeria’s broader UNGA push
