PARIS — Nigeria has secured a voting seat on football’s most prestigious individual honour, ranking among 20 African countries eligible to help decide the winner of the 2026 Ballon d’Or.
This comes after placing among the top 100 nations in the latest FIFA men’s world ranking.
ValidViewNetwork can confirm that Nigeria sits 26th among the qualifying countries, behind continental heavyweights Morocco, Senegal and Egypt. This comes under a jury system that hands one journalist per eligible nation a vote among the 100-member international panel.
According to the regulations published by French sports outlet L’Équipe, each juror ranks 10 of the 30 nominees drawn up by France Football and UEFA in descending order of merit, with points awarded on a sliding scale from 15 down to one.
The player who accumulates the most points across all 100 ballots wins the trophy, with a tiebreaker system based on first-, second- and third-place votes if needed.

Findings show that despite Nigeria’s voting rights, neither Victor Osimhen nor Ademola Lookman, the country’s most recent standout forwards made this year’s 30-man shortlist.
Nigeria’s absence from the 2026 FIFA World Cup was cited as a key factor weighing against both players’ candidacies despite solid club-level numbers.
When the winner will be known
ValidViewNetwork reports that the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony is scheduled for October 26 in London, with the assessment period covering performances between August 2025 and July 2026, including displays at the 2026 World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations.
