The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) played host to the German Consul General to Nigeria, His Excellency, Mr. Weert Borner and his wife, Dr. Imke Borner for possible collaborations to bolster agricultural innovation at FUNAAB.

During his time at FUNAAB, Mr. Borner reportedly delivered a compelling Lecture titled “Nigeria-German Cooperation: Improving Food Security Through Sustainable Agriculture.”

Mr. Weert Borner, Wife and Principal Officers of the University.

This was contained in a statement made available by Olasunkanmi Olajide, Acting Head, Directorate of Public Relations, FUNAAB.

According to Olajide , the German Consul General underscored the critical importance of addressing food security, education, and housing, while also highlighting the pressing issue of climate change, which demands global attention and concerted efforts.

”Advocating for a global alliance for food security, Mr. Borner stressed the need for urgent action, pointing out that while the German government and the United Nations have provided aid in food supplies, it’s imperative to seek sustainable solutions for long-term development and prosperity”.

”He particularly stressed the significance of enhancing fertilizer production with renewable energy sources, foreseeing substantial advancements in agricultural output through innovative approaches”.

”Highlighting the priority placed by the German government on Nigerian-German cooperation in food security, Mr. Borner referenced high-level visits to Nigerian authorities, including the President and Commander in Chief, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR to foster agricultural collaborations”.

”According to him, the aim was to further discuss agricultural-related issues and to ensure there was economic stability in Nigeria.

He noted that there were three major areas the discussion focused on which were to improve agricultural technology, be innovative and make agriculture a business, and foster rural development by improving the energy infrastructure.

Mr. Borner, a high-ranking German Diplomat observed the many inherent benefits from cassava, ranging from the skins and the outer layers which could be used for many purposes, adding that a possible area of partnership was how to improve the productivity on cassava.

Besides, he also noted the ongoing partnerships aimed at establishing Trade Fairs focused on agro-food, slated to commence on March 26.

Commending the inviting ambience of FUNAAB, Mr. Borner likened the University to a flourishing garden. He decried the dilapidated road from Camp to the University Gate, adding that the intra-campus road and aesthetics were soothing relief.

Mr. Borner, however, commended the lyrics and rhythm of the FUNAAB Anthem, appreciating the University for composing such a melodious anthem.

Earlier in his Welcome Address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde expressed gratitude to Mr. Borner and his wife for their visit, saying that it symbolised the enduring partnership between Germany and FUNAAB.

He emphasised the University’s commitment to fostering collaboration through initiatives such as faculty exchanges, joint research endeavours, and the integration of contemporary agricultural technologies into the curriculum.

The visit of the German Consul General serves as a pivotal moment for FUNAAB, offering an invaluable opportunity to explore avenues of cooperation and innovation between the University and Germany.

As both entities seek to address global challenges in agriculture, climate change, and sustainable development, the discussions and engagements held during Mr. Borner’s visit are poised to pave the way for impactful partnerships that transcend borders and promote shared prosperity”.
