Customs Seize 940 Rounds of Ammunition Smuggled Through Benin Border into Ogun State

The Nigeria Customs Service has made a significant seizure of 940 smuggled rounds of live ammunition in Ogun State.

The ammunition was confiscated along the Benin-Idiroko border on Thursday, March 14, 2024.

Ahmadu Shuaibu, the Comptroller of the Ogun 1 Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, briefed the press at the Idi-Iroko office, revealing that the ammunition was ingeniously concealed in sacks of cassava flakes, commonly known as garri.

The anti-smuggling operation, which had been tracking the ammunition for over two weeks from the Republic of Benin, eventually intercepted it as it was being smuggled into the country.

Shuaibu highlighted the level of surveillance and security measures employed by the smugglers to evade detection but praised the superior security network of the Command, which facilitated the seizure.

However, the suspected smugglers abandoned the items and fled to escape arrest.

In addition to the ammunition seizure, the Command also recorded the confiscation of 123 sacks and 3,172 parcels of cannabis sativa (Indian Hemp), 380 pieces of donkey skin, 304 bales of used clothes, and 910 cartons of frozen poultry products, among other items.

These seizures were made across Ogun State through intelligence gathering and 24-hour patrol/anti-smuggling operations.

The Duty Paid Value of the seized items amounts to over N557 million.

Regarding revenue generation, the Command reported a total revenue of N24,283,788 from January till date, primarily sourced from baggage assessment and auction sales of petroleum products.

Shuaibu concluded his address by expressing appreciation for the continuous support of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi MFR, and his management team.
