Three deaths, three incidents, one diplomatic demand

Three Nigerian nationals died in separate incidents across South Africa between September 18 and 21, prompting Nigeria’s Consulate General in Johannesburg to demand investigations and justice.

ValidViewNetwork gathered that the deceased were identified as Kenechukwu Christopher Igwemmadu, Olaniyi Olaleye Olatunde and Christian Hillary Nnaemeka.

Nigeria’s Consul-General in Johannesburg, Ambassador Ninikanwa Okey-Uche, called on South African authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and ensure that anyone found responsible faces the law.

According to the Consulate’s account, Igwemmadu died on September 18 after allegedly jumping from a building at Kenlin Court on Douglas Street, Bloemfontein, while attempting to escape alleged police harassment and brutality.

The second case involved Olatunde, a Nigerian security guard. The Consulate said he was allegedly shot at Spanata Bar and Grills Night Club in Mamelodi East, Pretoria, following an argument over a cup belonging to the club. He died on September 21.

The third case involved Nnaemeka, whose death followed an alleged encounter with a team associated with South African politician and investigative content creator Xolani Khumalo in Primrose, Ekurhuleni.

The allegations surrounding the three deaths remain subject to investigation.

A relationship with a long memory

Nigeria and South Africa have a complicated but historically significant relationship. Nigeria played an important diplomatic role in opposition to apartheid and provided political, financial and material support to the liberation struggle in southern Africa.

The relationship was particularly visible during the administrations of General Murtala Mohammed and General Olusegun Obasanjo, while Nigeria’s South African Relief Fund was established in 1976 to support the anti-apartheid struggle.

Nigeria’s foreign-policy tradition has also consistently placed African affairs high on its diplomatic agenda.

But the post-apartheid relationship has not been free of friction.Nigerians in South Africa have repeatedly featured in disputes involving crime, immigration, business competition and xenophobia.

South Africans, in turn, have raised concerns about criminal activities involving some foreign nationals, including Nigerians.

That distinction matters. The deaths of three Nigerians in separate incidents do not, by themselves, establish a coordinated xenophobic campaign.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the Consulate’s demand for investigations is therefore significant because it places the emphasis on establishing the facts of each case rather than assuming a common cause.

What Nigeria is asking for

The demand from Nigeria’s diplomatic representatives is straightforward: establish the facts, identify responsibility where evidence supports it and ensure due process.

Diplomatic protection is not simply about public condemnation. It involves consular engagement, monitoring investigations, assisting affected families and ensuring that Nigerian citizens receive lawful treatment abroad.

ValidViewNetwork gathered that the Consulate has consequently asked South African authorities to investigate the deaths and ensure that anyone found responsible faces the law.

The demand also comes against the background of Nigeria’s long involvement in southern African affairs.

A country that once invested considerable political capital in the liberation of southern Africa must also be able to ask difficult questions when its citizens die there. The answers, however, must come through evidence, investigation and the law. ValidViewNetwork reports.
