To mark his first year in office, Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago has granted clemency to 30 inmates at the old and new Correctional Centres in Minna, the state capital. Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, Governor Bago announced the payment of fines for these inmates during a visit to both centres on Tuesday.
This act is part of a series of activities commemorating his one-year anniversary in office.
During the visit, Usman also presented malaria medication and food items to the centres’ officials to help mitigate the economic hardship faced by the inmates.
He emphasized that these gestures were intended to help the inmates feel included and cared for. He urged the released inmates to reintegrate into society and become positive representatives of both the state and the nation.
“Thirty people have been selected for clemency based on the minor nature of their offenses, and their fines will be paid. Recently, the governor also approved the payment of fines for 100 inmates, which has been carried out. We have also brought food, drugs, and other essential items,” Usman stated.

Governor Bago assured that the released inmates would receive training in agriculture and other entrepreneurial skills to help them become productive members of society.
In a related event, the governor’s wife, Fatima Bago, celebrated the anniversary with orphans at the state Orphanage Home. She highlighted her husband’s administration’s commitment to the welfare of the children, noting that they are included in upcoming policies and programs aimed at improving their lives.
“This is just the beginning. We have not started anything serious yet. We have so many plans for the children, and they will be included in our plans for a new Niger. Better days are ahead for the children of Niger State. The Ministry of Women’s Affairs will work with the orphanage management to repair the damaged parts of the facility,” she said.
These initiatives reflect the administration’s broader goals of addressing the needs of vulnerable populations and fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all citizens of Niger State.
