Newgate University in Minna, Niger State, has taken decisive action against examination malpractices by dismissing two lecturers and rusticating five students. Vice Chancellor Prof. Sadiq Yussuf announced the measures during a media briefing, emphasizing the institution’s commitment to upholding academic integrity ahead of its historic maiden convocation on December 3, 2025. The event, set for the university’s campus along Minna-Bida Road, marks a significant milestone for the private university established in May 2022.
The convocation will celebrate 207 graduates across three faculties, with an impressive breakdown of academic achievements: 14 First Class, 81 Second Class Upper, 88 Second Class Lower, and 24 Third Class degrees. Among the graduands, 102 are female and 105 male, reflecting a balanced cohort. Prof. Yussuf highlighted these successes despite challenges like funding and infrastructure, crediting the management team, students, and stakeholders for the progress.
Newgate University, now boasting nearly 2,000 students from an initial 350, runs 13 programmes across four faculties, all registered with the National Universities Commission (NUC). It has secured full NUC accreditation for 10 programmes, including Software Engineering, Mass Communication, Accounting, Nursing Science, and Public Health, with scores exceeding 90% in recent evaluations. Additional milestones include a 79% pass rate in Nursing Council exams, professional accreditations for nursing and medical laboratory science, modern facilities, and new approvals for Doctor of Physiotherapy and LLB programmes.
