New UK Rule Blocks Nigerian-Trained Teachers From Direct QTS Route

A new United Kingdom rule has removed Nigeria-trained teachers from the direct application route for Qualified Teacher Status in England, creating a new qualification barrier for Nigerian educators seeking to work in the country’s schools.

The change took effect on September 9, according to the UK government’s current eligibility guidance.

Under the revised arrangement, teachers trained in Nigeria, Ghana and India can no longer use the direct overseas-trained teacher service to apply for QTS in England.

The qualification matters because QTS is an important professional status for teachers working in many English schools.

The British government says eligibility depends partly on whether a country has an appropriate national regulator capable of confirming a teacher’s professional standing and providing authenticated references.

The new guidance specifically identifies concerns around the verification of professional records.

For Nigerian teachers, the change could affect a professional route that has previously provided a pathway into England’s education system.

It does not, however, mean that Nigerian-trained teachers can never work in England. The government’s guidance indicates that teachers who do not qualify through the direct service may have alternative routes depending on their individual circumstances.

That distinction is important because the policy change concerns eligibility for the particular QTS application route, not an absolute prohibition on Nigerian teachers working in Britain.
