Beyond Colour: New Palm Oil Adulteration Methods Raise Health Alarm in Lagos

Lagos State has raised a fresh warning over sophisticated methods being used to adulterate palm oil, urging consumers to be more careful as regulators intensify surveillance of markets.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the warning came from the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency following discussions at the 2026 Lagos State Food Safety Conference.

The concern is not simply that traders may dilute palm oil. Experts say some emerging methods involve the use of dyes to intensify colour, blending with recovered or recycled cooking oil and combinations of adulterants designed to make contaminated oil harder to detect through ordinary checks.

That matters because colour has traditionally influenced how many Nigerian consumers judge palm oil.

Findings by ValidViewNetwork show that consumers believe that a deeply red oil is authentic, but experts are now warning buyers that colour alone cannot establish whether the product is safe.

LASCOPA has consequently urged residents to report suspicious products while increasing surveillance in markets.

The agency says anyone caught selling adulterated palm oil could face arrest and prosecution.

Consumers have also been advised that visual inspection can serve only as an initial precaution.

The deeper problem is the sophistication of adulteration. As techniques become more difficult to detect, consumers may increasingly need regulators, laboratories and market surveillance systems to do the work that household inspection cannot do.
