The Nigerian Democratic Congress candidate for Oredo Federal Constituency in the January 16, 2027 House of Representatives election, Efosa Omo-Osagie, has promised to sponsor a bill prohibiting the deployment of National Youth Service Corps members to states and communities threatened by terrorism and banditry.
The pledge was made during the unveiling of his 15-point legislative agenda at consultation meetings with party stakeholders in Edo State and Abuja, ValidViewNetwork reports .
THE BILL
Omo-Osagie, popularly known as Mighty Man, said the proposed legislation would also penalise officials who deploy corps members to areas affected by insecurity despite existing security advisories.
“Among other things, I am seriously considering a bill to prohibit posting of NYSC corps members to states or parts of the federation under terrorists and bandits occupation or threats,” he said .
THE MANIFESTO
His agenda, organised under six thematic areas, also covers infrastructure, reduction of governance costs, economic empowerment, anti-corruption, healthcare and education.
Under infrastructure, he proposed a bill mandating the installation of firefighting equipment, boreholes, solar panels and police desk offices in public markets across the country.
On the cost of governance, Omo-Osagie promised to sponsor bills prohibiting pensions and other post-tenure benefits for elected public office holders, except former presidents and vice-presidents.
He also criticised the use of public funds to maintain offices and programmes associated with the spouses and children of elected officials.
“Nigeria cannot continue like this. Sometimes we’ve got to say enough is enough, and I think this is the time,” he declared .
THE CONTEXT
Omo-Osagie’s consultations come one week after a Federal High Court sitting in Benin City sacked the previous NDC candidate, Uyi Omosigho, and declared Omo-Osagie the authentic candidate of the party.
The judgment, delivered on October 27, 2026, followed a legal battle involving several aspirants .The consultations are expected to precede the constitution of his campaign council, which he said would be announced in the coming days.
WHY IT MATTERS
The posting of corps members to insecure areas has been a recurring concern in Nigeria.
In October 2026, 20 prospective corps members were abducted in Imo State while travelling to their orientation camps. They were later rescued, but the incident highlighted the dangers faced by young Nigerians serving their country.
Omo-Osagie’s proposed bill is a recognition that the NYSC scheme, while noble, must adapt to the reality of Nigeria’s security challenges. If passed, it would ensure that no corps member is sent to a place where their life is at risk.
The bill has been promised. The campaign has begun. And the corps members are watching. ValidViewNetwork reports.
