ABUJA — The Nigerian Navy and the nation’s defense establishment have been plunged into a state of solemnity following the transition of Rear Admiral Musa Bello Katagum, the Chief of Operations at Naval Headquarters.

​The senior officer reportedly passed away in Egypt, where he had been receiving medical evaluation and treatment for a protracted illness. His death was officially confirmed in a statement released by the Director of Naval Information, Captain Abiodun Folorunsho.

​Rear Admiral Katagum was widely regarded as one of the Navy’s most astute strategic minds. Before his appointment as Chief of Operations in November 2025—a role critical to the coordination of Nigeria’s maritime security—he served with distinction as the Chief of Naval Intelligence (CNI).

​His career was characterized by a relentless pursuit of operational efficiency. Notably, Katagum played a pivotal role at the Defence Headquarters and previously served as the Director of the Presidential Communication, Command and Control Centre (PC4). Peers and subordinates alike have described him as a “visionary leader” whose intelligence-led approach was instrumental in curbing maritime threats and enhancing the Navy’s tactical readiness in recent years.

​President Bola Tinubu has expressed profound sadness over the loss, describing Katagum’s passing as a significant blow to the Nigerian Armed Forces. In a statement via his spokesperson, the President lauded the late Admiral for his “valour, exceptional leadership, and mentorship,” noting that his contributions to national security were immeasurable.

​The Chief of the Naval Staff, along with the entire rank and file of the service, extended their deepest condolences to the Katagum family. They emphasized that his legacy of discipline and loyalty to the Nigerian state would remain a guiding light for future naval officers.
