Minimum wage: Sokoto asks NLC to submit proposal

The Sokoto State Government has called on the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress to submit its proposal for the wage adjustment

This is coming after NLC’s nationwide ultimatum on the implementation of the new minimum wage.

The Deputy Governor, Alhaji Idris Gobir, made the appeal on Monday during a meeting with labour union leaders in Sokoto.

Gobir assured the workers of the state government’s commitment to implementing the new minimum wage and pledged to expedite the harmonization process once the proposal is received.

“Go and bring your proposal for the new minimum wage implementation, and I assure you I will facilitate the process of quick harmonisation.

“The state government, under our performing Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, is fully committed to ensuring the implementation of the new minimum wage for the state workforce,” Gobir said.

The NLC had recently issued a directive at its meeting in Rivers State, mandating that workers in states that fail to approve the new minimum wage embark on strike by the end of November. This has heightened the urgency for compliance across states, including Sokoto.

The Sokoto State NLC Chairman, Comrade Abdullahi Aliyu Jungul, lauded the government’s apparent commitment to the wage review. He urged civil servants to remain calm, assuring them that the union would submit its proposal promptly.

“We are making all necessary arrangements to ensure the implementation of the new minimum wage. The state government has shown genuine commitment, and we will forward our proposed table anytime from now,” Jungul said.

The NLC chairman also commended the state government for its willingness to address workers’ welfare and emphasized the union’s readiness to cooperate for a smooth implementation process.

As the November deadline draws closer, Sokoto workers will be looking to the state government for swift action to meet the labour union’s demands and avoid industrial action.
