Former Big Brother Naija housemate and professional boxer Mike Edwards has challenged Nigerian streamer and singer Carter Efe to a boxing bout, insisting that it is time for the entertainer to face what he called a “real” fighter.
Edwards revived the challenge after Carter Efe recently defeated singer Speed Darlington in the latest edition of his celebrity boxing run.
The former reality-show star said he had already called out Carter Efe after his first bout and was now questioning why the proposed showdown had still not happened.
“I’VE BEEN RIGHT HERE”
Edwards said Carter Efe had repeatedly spoken about wanting to fight “real men” and “real fighters”.
His response was essentially: why not fight him? He said he had previously told Carter Efe to handle his first fight successfully and then meet him for what he described as a “super fight”.
Edwards pointed out that Carter Efe had now fought three times while he had fought once.
“So what’s the excuse now?” he asked. He then urged Carter Efe to stop choosing what he considered easier opponents and accept the challenge.
“GIVE THE PEOPLE VALUE FOR THEIR MONEY”
Despite the aggressive language of his challenge, Edwards acknowledged the commercial side of celebrity boxing. He said he understood that fighters were trying to make money from the events but argued that the entertainment value should also justify what fans pay to watch.
He called for a matchup that would generate genuine public interest. Edwards also disclosed that he had spoken with Dr Eazy Adamu and Balmoral Promotions about the possibility of staging the fight.
DUBAI FIRST, CARTER EFE NEXT?
Edwards said he would first concentrate on his scheduled bout in Dubai on November 7. After that, he wants the Carter Efe fight. He even supplied the proposed billing: “Machine Mike vs Carter Efe.”
Whether the fight eventually happens remains a matter for the fighters and promoters. For now, Edwards has made his position unmistakable.
“You say you want a real fighter? I’m not hard to find,” he told Carter Efe.
THE CELEBRITY BOXING BOOM
The proposed matchup also reflects the growing popularity of celebrity boxing in Nigeria, where musicians, influencers, reality stars and internet personalities have increasingly entered the ring.
The attraction is not always purely sporting. Entertainment, personality clashes, online rivalries and fan engagement have become part of the product.
That is precisely why a Mike Edwards-Carter Efe fight could generate considerable attention if promoters eventually agree terms.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Edwards has now thrown the challenge back into Carter Efe’s court, with the proposed fight promising a mixture of boxing, entertainment and the kind of social-media drama that often sells a spectacle before the first bell rings.
