Manchester United have sacked head coach Ruben Amorim, the club confirmed in a dramatic decision on Monday, 5 January 2026, a club statement revealed.

The Portuguese coach, who only joined the Red Devils in November 2024, has been relieved of his duties amid growing dissatisfaction with the team’s performances and recent comments that exposed internal tensions at Old Trafford.

Amorim’s tenure saw the club sitting sixth in the Premier League table at the time of his dismissal, with reports confirming his departure came less than 24 hours after he publicly criticised the club’s hierarchy during a press conference following a 1–1 draw with Leeds United.

He said, “Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.

“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change.

“This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.

“The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.

“Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”
