Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has insisted that the club remains confident it can prove its innocence in the long-running Premier League financial case involving 115 alleged regulatory breaches.
Al Mubarak made the statement in an open letter to Manchester City supporters on Saturday, following reports that an independent commission had found the club guilty on all but one of the charges.
The Premier League has not officially announced the commission’s findings or any punishment, meaning the reported outcome remains subject to the formal process.
“The Premier League process still has a long way to run, and our confidence and intent in proving the club’s innocence is just as strong as when this began,” Al Mubarak said.
City maintain long-standing denial
Manchester City have consistently denied the allegations, which relate to alleged breaches between 2009 and 2018.
The Premier League case includes accusations that the club failed to provide accurate financial information and details concerning payments to players and coaches.
It also includes alleged breaches of financial sustainability rules and an allegation that City failed to cooperate with the investigation.
The case was referred to an independent commission, with the hearing beginning behind closed doors in September 2024 and lasting about 12 weeks.
City’s position has not changed, according to a club spokesperson cited by AFP.
The club is understood to be prepared to appeal if the reported findings are formally confirmed.
What happens next?
The reported findings could have major consequences for English football if ultimately upheld after any appeal.
Possible sanctions have been discussed publicly, including points deductions and, in the most severe scenarios, expulsion from the Premier League.
However, no punishment has been announced and the club has not been formally presented with a final public decision by the league.
