BIRNIN KEBBI – In a high-stakes political shift that has sent ripples through the nation’s capital, the former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Chika Malami, SAN, has formally positioned the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the primary vehicle to dismantle the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming elections.
Malami, who served as the chief law officer under the previous administration, broke his silence following a triumphant yet politically charged “homecoming” to Kebbi State. In a statement released on Monday by his media aide, Bello Doka, the former minister described the ADC as a “formidable coalition” specifically engineered to “rescue Nigeria” from what he characterized as a cycle of failed governance.
A Quest for ‘Truth and Rescue’
The statement, laden with emotional undertones, comes amid a backdrop of intense legal and political scrutiny. Malami has recently faced a series of challenges from the central government, including asset forfeiture proceedings and allegations he describes as “ceaseless political persecution.”
Despite these hurdles, Malami remains defiant. “My homecoming is not ordinary but a clear message of an uncompromising quest for truth and rescue,” he declared. “In ADC, we have a formidable coalition capable of rescuing Nigeria and our state; I will remain undeterred and strong in the face of political persecution.”
Eyeing the Kebbi Seat of Power
Malami’s rhetoric was particularly sharp regarding his home state, Kebbi. He reaffirmed his “absolute loyalty” to the ADC leadership and his supporters, signaling a definitive move to contest the Kebbi State governorship. He emphasized that his mission is to “reposition” the state through the ballot box, driven by the massive support he received upon his return.
Addressing the national narrative, the former AGF rejected the notion that the country is “beyond repairs,” calling for a fearless approach to governance.
“We believe in our country; we have confidence in our massive support. Therefore, together we can rescue our people with no retreat, no surrender: ‘Babu Gudu, Babu Ja Baya’.”
Building Alliances
In a strategic move to broaden his political base, Malami expressed gratitude to several high-profile political figures across party lines—including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Nasir El-Rufai—for their “principled intervention” during his recent trials. This cross-party acknowledgment suggests the ADC may be looking to lead a broader “mega-party” alignment to challenge the APC’s dominance in 2027.
