Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) sealed three residential properties in the Lekki-Ajah corridor on January 19, 2026, targeting severe environmental infractions and public health risks from improper sewage disposal. These actions underscore the state’s ongoing crackdown on wastewater mismanagement in upscale neighborhoods.
Enforcement Details
The first site, No. 3 Police Commissioner Street in Balogun Town opposite Fara Park Estate, Lekki, involved residents dumping wastewater into an open pit, creating pollution hazards. At No. 53/55 Miracle Avenue, United Estate, Sangotedo, operators illegally fitted a pumping machine to a septic tank, channeling untreated fecal waste into public drains. No. 2 Godwin Oise Close off Akinnagbe Street, Badore, Ajah, featured unauthorized pipes releasing raw sewage into nearby wetlands, endangering local ecosystems.
Official Response
LSWMO General Manager Engr. Adefemi Afolabi condemned these violations as direct threats to lives and the environment, vowing stricter enforcement under Lagos’ sanitation laws. He called on residents and property managers to prioritize compliant wastewater practices, emphasizing collective responsibility for a healthier city. Offenders face seals, fines, or prosecution until remediation occurs.
Broader Context
These raids align with LSWMO’s 2026 “zero tolerance” push, following similar actions like the January sealing of a Lekki Phase 1 estate for sewage dumping and staff obstruction. Past cases in Ilasan and Ikota GRA highlight recurring issues in high-density areas, often sparked by public tips.
