There are moments when courage is no longer a choice between bravery and fear, but a decision between saving yourself and saving others. Ejiro Otarigho and Alagbe Hezekiah found themselves in such defining moments when fire engulfed tankers in two separate incidents, threatening lives, homes, businesses and properties around them. Rather than flee from the danger, both men confronted it with extraordinary courage, moving burning tankers away from populated areas and preventing potentially catastrophic consequences.

They were not soldiers. They were not firefighters. They were not emergency responders specially trained for moments of national crisis. They were ordinary drivers who suddenly found themselves standing between disaster and the lives of innocent people.

One was Ejiro Otarigho, whose remarkable intervention in Delta State turned a potentially devastating tanker fire into a story of courage, selflessness and love for humanity.

Ejiro Otarigho

The other is Alagbe Hezekiah from Ogbomoso, whose extraordinary decision on Thursday, September 17, 2026 saved hundreds of lives in Iwo, Osun State.

Their stories happened at different times and different locations. Yet, they share one extraordinary thread.

When others were running away from danger, Ejiro and Hezekiah ran towards it.

EJIRO OTARIGHO: COURAGE IN THE FACE OF FIRE

On June 10, 2022, Ejiro Otarigho became a symbol of extraordinary courage when he confronted a terrifying tanker fire at Ohoror Junction, along the East West Road in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

Ejiro was driving a tanker when it caught fire near a densely populated area.

The situation presented a horrifying possibility.

The burning tanker was dangerously close to people, businesses and other properties. Had the fire reached surrounding structures or caused an explosion, the consequences could have been devastating.

But Ejiro did something remarkable.

Instead of abandoning the burning tanker and fleeing to safety, he got back into the vehicle and drove it away from the populated area.

He deliberately moved the burning tanker away from people and property, putting his own life at enormous risk in the process.

His intervention eventually helped prevent what could have become a major disaster.

Ejiro’s action earned him widespread commendation and transformed him from an ordinary tanker driver into a national symbol of courage and selflessness.

His decision was simple in principle but extraordinary in execution.

He placed the lives of others above his own safety.

FOUR YEARS LATER, HEZEKIAH REPEATS THE EXTRAORDINARY

Four years after Ejiro’s courageous intervention, another tanker driver found himself confronted by an eerily similar nightmare.

This time, the location was Feesu Junction along the Iwo Ibadan Expressway, opposite Lado Filling Station in Iwo, Osun State.

The date was Thursday, September 17, 2026.

His name is Alagbe Hezekiah, a tanker driver and proud indigene of Ogbomoso.

He had arrived in Iwo to supply diesel to a filling station.

The tanker had been positioned for the fuel to be discharged when disaster suddenly struck.

Fire erupted from the tanker.

The exact cause of the fire remains unknown.

Hezekiah Alagbe

Hezekiah and his motor boy initially attempted to extinguish the flames with a fire extinguisher. But the fire was already too intense.

The flames were spreading rapidly towards the filling station, fuel pumps, nearby businesses and residential buildings.

His apprentice fled in panic.

Hezekiah, however, remained.

THE MOMENT THAT DEFINED A HERO

Faced with a burning tanker capable of causing catastrophic destruction, Hezekiah made a decision that could easily have cost him his life.

He entered the burning tanker.

Then he drove.

He drove the flaming vehicle away from the filling station.

He drove it away from the people.

He drove it away from the businesses.

He drove it away from the homes.

He drove towards an area where the potential loss of human life would be minimised.

Explaining his decision, Hezekiah said:

“I thought of what I can do to avert putting lives of many and properties at risk. I drove the vehicle out of the petrol station.

I scanned the area for where there are no people living. I decided to drive to a riverbank where there will be no casualties.”

He knew he might not survive.

Yet, he chose to act.

“I took the bold step with the conviction that I may survive or be consumed and die with the incident.

However, sacrificing my life to save properties and other people’s lives would be better than risking others with the incident.”

Those words capture the extraordinary spirit behind his intervention.

THE RACE TO THE RIVERBANK

With the back of the tanker engulfed in flames, Hezekiah drove through the road towards a safer location.

He eventually reached an uninhabited riverbank.

There, he detached the head of the truck from the burning tank.

That decision helped prevent the flames from spreading further.

Eyewitness accounts from Odo Ori Market indicated that his swift intervention may have prevented a much larger catastrophe at Feesu Junction, an area surrounded by filling stations, businesses and homes.

Most importantly, no life was lost.

TWO MEN, TWO INCIDENTS, ONE EXTRAORDINARY CHOICE

The similarities between Ejiro Otarigho and Alagbe Hezekiah are difficult to ignore.

Ejiro faced a tanker fire in Delta State on June 10, 2022.

Hezekiah faced a tanker fire in Iwo, Osun State on September 17, 2026.

Ejiro drove a burning tanker away from a populated environment.

Hezekiah drove a burning tanker away from a filling station, businesses and homes towards an uninhabited riverbank.

Both men confronted potentially catastrophic situations.

Both understood the danger.

Both had every reason to run.

Both could have chosen self preservation.

Instead, both chose humanity.

HEROES ARE NOT ALWAYS WEARING UNIFORMS

The stories of Ejiro and Hezekiah remind Nigerians that heroism does not always announce itself with uniforms, medals or official titles.

Sometimes, heroism appears behind the steering wheel of a tanker.

Sometimes, courage is found in the heart of a driver who sees danger and thinks first about the lives of strangers.

Sometimes, the difference between tragedy and survival is one person’s willingness to make an extraordinarily difficult decision.

Ejiro demonstrated that courage in Delta State.

Hezekiah demonstrated it again in Osun State.

Their professions may be ordinary, but their decisions were anything but ordinary.

Ejiro became a testament to love for humanity, selflessness and uncommon bravery.

Hezekiah has now emerged as another powerful testament to the same virtues.

THE EXPERIENCE BEHIND HEZEKIAH’S COURAGE

Hezekiah is not a novice behind the wheel.

He has been driving tankers since 2004, giving him more than two decades of experience on the road.

Yet, he acknowledged that he had never encountered an incident like the one at Feesu Junction.

His experience, however, did not make the danger less frightening.

Rather, it appears to have helped him understand the enormous consequences of allowing a burning tanker to remain close to a populated environment.

He has subsequently been celebrated as “The Best Driver of the Year”, with many Nigerians describing his action as a powerful demonstration of courage, professionalism and selflessness.

He has also used the occasion to appeal to the governments of Oyo and Osun States to address deplorable roads.

He further urged fellow tanker drivers to place safety and human life above every other consideration.

A LEGACY OF COURAGE

Ejiro Otarigho and Alagbe Hezekiah deserve more than applause.

Their stories deserve to be remembered because they represent a quality that society desperately needs.

The willingness to protect another person’s life even when doing so comes at a personal cost.

Ejiro showed that quality in Delta State.

Hezekiah has demonstrated it in Osun State.

One incident happened in 2022.

The other happened in 2026.

Different places.

Different circumstances.

Different men.

But one extraordinary principle connects them.

Human life mattered more to them than their own safety.

ValidViewNetwork reports that both men demonstrated the profound difference one courageous decision can make when lives and property are hanging in the balance.

ValidViewNetwork reports that Ejiro’s story from Delta State and Hezekiah’s story from Osun State deserve to be preserved as powerful accounts of Nigerian courage and selflessness.

ValidViewNetwork reports that their actions offer a compelling reminder that heroism is ultimately measured not by the uniform a person wears, status or political office but by what that person is willing to do when another life is at risk.

Ultimately, the stories of Ejiro Otarigho and Alagbe Hezekiah are more than accounts of tanker fires. They are powerful reminders that courage is revealed when a person chooses to protect others despite the danger to himself. Ejiro did it in Delta State in 2022, while Hezekiah repeated that extraordinary act of selflessness in Iwo, Osun State, in 2026. Their actions turned moments of imminent disaster into stories of survival, hope and humanity. Nigeria may remember the fires, but it should never forget the men who drove into danger so that others could live. Like Ejiro, like Hezekiah, they showed that true heroism is not about seeking recognition, but about having the courage to save lives when nobody else can. ValidViewNetwork reports that their remarkable interventions deserve to be remembered, celebrated and passed from one generation to another as enduring examples of uncommon Nigerian bravery.
