A 100-level student of the University of Ilesa, Gbolahan Ojo, lost his life on Friday evening after being electrocuted while using his mobile phone connected to electricity during a thunderstorm.
The incident occurred at a private hostel near the Prototype Engineering Development Institute (PEDI) junction in Ilesa. According to eyewitnesses, Gbolahan was playing a game on his phone, which was plugged in, when lightning struck during a heavy downpour, resulting in his electrocution. He was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
The university management, in a statement signed by Registrar Funso Ojo, described the event as tragic and deeply regrettable. The school promptly notified the police, and after due clearance, the deceased’s remains were deposited at Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa. The police have since launched a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Taiwo Asaolu, alongside other university officials and the Area Commander of Police, personally consoled the bereaved father upon his arrival in Ilesa. The university has pledged continued support to the family during this period of intense grief.
The entire University of Ilesa community mourns the painful loss of Gbolahan Ojo and extends heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, classmates, and the Department of Business Administration, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
