The Lagos State Government (LASG) is gearing up for a spectacular 10th anniversary of the #GreaterLagosCountdown, a two-day extravaganza from Tuesday, December 30, to Wednesday, December 31, 2025. Kicking off daily at 7:00 p.m., the event will light up six key locations across the state, blending electrifying music, cultural displays, and a midnight countdown to ring in 2026.
This year’s theme, “Legends of Afrobeats,” pays tribute to the trailblazers who transformed Nigeria’s sound into a global phenomenon. From Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat foundations to modern giants like Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy, Afrobeats has evolved into one of Africa’s most potent cultural exports, generating billions in revenue and dominating international charts.
Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, hailed the milestone as a “cultural movement embodying Lagosians’ spirit, creativity, and resilience.” She highlighted how the event aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ agenda, particularly in boosting tourism, youth engagement, and the creative economy. “Lagos is the heartbeat of Afrobeats,” she said, underscoring the state’s role in nurturing talents that have earned Grammy nods and sold-out world tours.

A Decade of Impact
Launched in 2016, the #GreaterLagosCountdown has grown from a single-night bash into a state-wide phenomenon, drawing over 100,000 attendees annually. It stimulates local economies through vendor stalls, food courts, and transport surges, while fostering unity amid Lagos’ hustle. Recent LASG reports note a 25% uptick in tourism footfall during these events, cementing the city’s status as Africa’s entertainment capital.

As 2025 wraps up, the countdown isn’t just a party—it’s a nod to legacy and a launchpad for tomorrow’s stars. Residents and visitors are urged to join safely, adhering to traffic advisories and security protocols from the Lagos State Police Command.
