Lagos Taskforce Dismantles Makeshift Highway Clinic, Rescues Patient

​LAGOS — In a bizarre twist during an ongoing regional clearance sweep, environmental enforcement officers in Lagos State have stumbled upon and dismantled an illegal, makeshift medical clinic operating openly inside a roadside shanty along the busy Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

​The startling discovery was made at the Barracks Bus Stop axis during a rigorous, multi-agency operation coordinated by the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC)—widely known as KAI—alongside the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), the Lagos State Task Force, and other security and traffic management bodies.

​According to officials, the enforcement team, led by LAGESC Corps Marshal Major Olaniyi O. Cole (retd.), was stunned to find that a portion of the illegal structures had been converted into an unauthorized health facility. Inside the cramped, unhygienic wooden shanty, operatives found a patient—who gave his name simply as Aminu—actively admitted and receiving medical treatment via an intravenous (IV) drip hung from the makeshift ceiling.

​An eyewitness, speaking anonymously, described the scene as baffling to commuters and local residents who traverse the major international gateway daily, completely unaware of the hazardous medical practices hidden in plain sight.

​Following consultations with the leadership of the RRS, Task Force, and LASTMA contingents present at the scene, the Corps Marshal immediately ordered the safe evacuation and removal of the patient. Heavy enforcement machinery subsequently tore down the unauthorized clinic and surrounding illegal structures to restore the right-of-way.

​The operation forms a core part of the state government’s intensified, zero-tolerance sweep along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway corridor, which has recently targeted severe environmental infractions, illegal squatters, and makeshift commercial encroachments that threaten public safety. Just days prior, the same sweep led to the humanitarian rescue of several vulnerable infants and nursing mothers discovered living in hazardous conditions near illegal dumpsites along the same corridor.

​Expressing deep concern over the development, Corps Marshal Cole strongly cautioned members of the public against patronizing quacks and unregulated health facilities operating within unauthorized environments. He emphasized that makeshift clinics pose severe health hazards due to a complete lack of hygiene, proper regulatory oversight, and emergency medical protocols.

​State authorities have vowed to maintain continuous, daily patrols along the corridor to deter squatters and unauthorized operators from reinhabiting the reclaimed spaces, ensuring the safety, health, and free movement of commuters and residents alike.
