The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos has cautioned party officials against endorsing aspirants ahead of the official commencement of its primary process, describing such actions as unauthorized and capable of causing division within the party.
In a statement issued on April 19, 2026, the Lagos State Chairman of the party, Cornelius Ojelabi, said the leadership’s attention had been drawn to “disturbing and unauthorized actions” by some Local Government Chairmen who publicly presented certain aspirants as consensus candidates.
Ojelabi condemned the practice, stating that it violates the party’s principles.
“Such conduct is wrong, unacceptable, and a clear violation of the principles of internal democracy, fairness, and due process for which our great party is known,” he said.
He warned that the actions could trigger unnecessary tension within the party.
“These actions are capable of generating avoidable tension, fueling suspicion, and causing needless division within our ranks at a time when unity and discipline remain paramount.”
The chairman clarified that the party had not yet released any guidelines or timetable for the forthcoming primaries, stressing that any form of endorsement at this stage lacks official backing.
“The Lagos State APC has not issued any guidelines, directives, or timetable for the forthcoming primaries. Consequently, any attempt… to project or anoint any aspirant as a consensus candidate is premature, misleading, and entirely without the authorization of the party.”
Ojelabi further warned that disciplinary measures would be taken against defaulters.
“Following this warning, it will not hesitate to impose appropriate disciplinary sanctions on any person that continues to engage in these unauthorized and destabilizing acts.”
He reassured party members of a fair process, emphasizing the leadership’s commitment to transparency and equity.
“The party remains committed to providing a level playing field for all aspirants, free from intimidation, coercion, or any form of undue influence.”
The APC chairman also urged officials expected to oversee the primaries to remain neutral.
“All party officials… are strongly enjoined to maintain strict neutrality in the overall interest of party unity, cohesion, and credibility.”
