Fuji music legend Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate or Kwam 1, has tendered an unreserved and heartfelt apology following an incident at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on August 5, 2025.
The controversy erupted when Kwam 1 attempted to board a ValueJet flight to Lagos carrying a water flask that airport officials alleged contained an unidentified liquid substance suspected to be alcohol, a prohibited item on flights. The situation escalated with the airport security and flight personnel, leading to a physical scuffle and the singer being deboarded. This incident also resulted in the suspension of two ValueJet pilots for six months due to breaches in aviation safety protocols, and Kwam 1 was placed on a six-month no-fly ban by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
In a statement issued on August 8, 2025, Kwam 1 explained that he suffers from chronic dehydration, which necessitates carrying water at all times based on medical advice. He emphasized that the flask was empty during two separate security screenings and was only filled with water at the airport lounge, right before heading to the tarmac. He rejected the allegations that his flask contained alcohol and invited verification through CCTV footage at the airport lounge. He expressed regret for the disruption caused and stated that it was never his intention to violate aviation protocols or cause any disturbances.
The Fuji icon reaffirmed his patriotism and loyalty to Nigeria, highlighting his lifelong dedication to promoting Nigerian culture globally through his music. He apologized to the Presidency, Ministry of Aviation, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), NCAA, ValueJet, fellow Nigerians, and his global fans for the incident, promising to uphold the responsibilities that come with his status as a global ambassador of Nigerian music.
This incident has sparked widespread discussion on aviation safety and celebrity conduct in Nigeria, with officials and the public closely watching subsequent developments.
