Kano Activist’s Murder: Foundation Petitions Police, Demands Full Investigation

The Foundation for Digital Justice has asked the Kano State Police Command to conduct a thorough investigation into the murder of political commentator Ibrahim Khalil, popularly known as Dan Shagamu.

Khalil was found dead at his residence in Gaida, Kano metropolis, on September 9, 2026.

The Foundation’s petition, signed by its senior legal adviser, Festus Ogun, said the circumstances surrounding the killing raised serious questions requiring investigation.

The development has attracted attention because Khalil had reportedly expressed fears for his safety before his death.

Reports said he had appealed to the Kano State Government, the Emir of Kano and the police over what he described as threats to his life.

Khalil operated Dan Shagamu International, where he discussed political, security, religious and social issues. The Kano Police Command had earlier arrested two suspects in connection with his killing and said the victim was attacked at his residence after unknown assailants forcibly entered the property.

The Foundation is now seeking a fuller investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

Rights groups had also condemned the killing and called for those responsible to be identified and prosecuted.

The central issue now is whether the investigation will establish who killed Khalil, why he was targeted and whether his earlier complaints contained clues that could have prevented the attack.
