KADUNA — A 20-year-old marriage has hit the rocks following allegations of domestic violence, as 47-year-old Johnson Gabriel approached a Kaduna Customary Court on Wednesday to seek the dissolution of his union with his wife, Janet.
Gabriel, a resident of the Sabon Tasha area, told the court that his life has been placed in constant danger due to the aggressive behavior of his wife. According to the petitioner, his spouse frequently resorts to physical violence whenever disagreements arise between them.
”My ill-tempered wife beats me whenever we have a misunderstanding,” Gabriel stated in his divorce filing. “My wife no longer behaves like a wife anymore. She is not submissive. She is disrespectful. I have tried my best to resolve the matter with her, but all efforts have failed.”
The petitioner revealed that multiple interventions by extended family members and their children have yielded no positive results, as the respondent has consistently refused to alter her conduct. “I am tired of the constant abuse and threat to life; I want a divorce,” he added.
In her defense, Janet denied all allegations leveled against her by her husband. She countered that the divorce suit is a calculated ploy orchestrated to clear the path for a new marriage.
”My husband wants to marry another woman, and he is trying to make me look bad. Whenever he has small money, his behaviour changes toward me,” she told the court.
Presiding Judge Dauda Bala urged the couple to explore an amicable settlement, emphasizing the need to consider the emotional well-being and future of their children.
The court subsequently adjourned the matter to September 20 to allow both parties time to report back on settlement talks or proceed with a full hearing.
