Reggae Legend Jimmy Cliff Passes Away at 81, Leaving an Enduring Legacy

The world mourns the loss of Jimmy Cliff, one of reggae music’s founding icons, who passed away at the age of 81. His wife, Latifa Chambers, announced the news on social media, confirming that Jimmy died following a seizure that led to pneumonia. She expressed profound sadness and gratitude to all who supported his remarkable career.

Jimmy Cliff was a true pioneer who carried reggae music from the streets of Jamaica to a global audience, becoming a beacon for the genre’s international recognition. His groundbreaking starring role in the 1972 film The Harder They Come, and timeless songs like Many Rivers to Cross and You Can Get It If You Really Want, introduced reggae’s spirit and message to millions worldwide.

Beyond his own legendary career, Cliff was instrumental in shaping the careers of others, including Bob Marley. Early in Bob Marley’s journey, Jimmy Cliff worked as an A&R “tester” for Leslie Kong’s Beverley’s Records, where he listened to demos and selected promising talent. It was Cliff’s discerning ear that led to Bob Marley securing his first recording deal, choosing songs such as Judge Not, One Cup of Coffee, and Terror for Marley’s debut recordings.
