ABEOKUTA – Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, the former Senator representing Ogun Central and daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has officially declared her intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking at a strategic meeting with supporters across the 20 local government areas of the state, held at the Marque Events Centre within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, the Senator expressed profound gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. She credited the President with ensuring a “conducive atmosphere” and a level playing field that encouraged her to join the ruling party and pursue her executive ambition.
A Historic Aspiration
If successful, Senator Obasanjo would become the first elected female governor in Nigeria’s history—a milestone she highlighted during her address.
”I want to specifically thank President Bola Tinubu and the First Lady for providing the environment that allowed me to join the APC and aspire to become the first female governor in the country,” she stated.
The governorship hopeful also extended her appreciation to the national leadership of the APC, the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, and the State Party Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi, for their “warm reception” and acceptance into the party fold.
National Headquarters Visit
Reflecting on her recent visit to the APC National Headquarters in Abuja, the former Commissioner for Health described the experience as a turning point. She noted that the party leadership welcomed her as a “bonafide member” and recognized her capacity as a grassroots mobilizer.
”I have pledged to take the party to greater heights, ensuring that the APC remains a consistent winner in all future polls. In Ogun State, the APC will continually produce governors,” Obasanjo affirmed.
Broad Support Base
The meeting saw a significant turnout from various interest groups, signaling a broad base of support for her candidacy. Notable groups in attendance included:
- Iyaniwura Ewekoro
- Group for Good Governance
- Integrity Group
- Igbimo Fun Obirin Ijoba Rere
- Tyres Dealers Association
- Frontliners and Good Women Front
Senator Obasanjo’s entry into the race adds a high-profile dimension to the 2027 contest in Ogun State, as political watchers wait to see how her candidacy will reshape the internal dynamics of the state’s ruling party.
