FIFA President Gianni Infantino will stand for re-election at the 77th FIFA Congress in Rabat, Morocco, on March 18, 2027, despite facing significant backlash over his now-abandoned plan to bring private investment into FIFA competitions.

The Swiss-Italian administrator, who has been at the helm since 2016, will seek a fourth term that could see him remain in office until 2031.

A Controversial Bid for a Fourth Term ValidViewNetwork gathered that FIFA President Gianni Infantino will stand for re-election at the 77th FIFA Congress in Rabat, Morocco, on March 18, 2027.

The decision, confirmed by FIFA in a statement on Sunday, September 6, 2026, comes despite significant backlash over his now-abandoned plan to bring private investment into FIFA competitions.

“The FIFA President announced in April that he will stand for re-election in 2027,” read a FIFA statement. “Of course, nothing has changed. Mr Infantino will be standing for re-election”.

The Private Investment Controversy

Infantino has been under pressure following his scrapped plans to sell stakes in FIFA competitions to private investment firms.

The plan sparked a global outcry, with European football’s governing body, UEFA, threatening to boycott all FIFA competitions, including the World Cup.

The backlash forced Infantino to abandon the proposal, but the controversy has lingered and could become a key issue in the upcoming election.

A Fourth Term Until 2031

Infantino, 56, first became FIFA President in February 2016, succeeding Sepp Blatter.

He was re-elected in 2019 and again in 2023. If re-elected in March 2027, he will serve until 2031.

The Candidates

As of now, Infantino is the only declared candidate for the election. However, his controversial tenure, marked by the expansion of the World Cup, the failed Super League project, and the private investment debacle, has drawn criticism from various quarters.

A Lesson for Nigerian Youths

This story is a reminder that power, once acquired, is rarely relinquished willingly. Infantino has faced significant opposition, yet he remains the only candidate.

The same people who cling to power will never allow their own children to be pushed aside. Their families are protected.

For young Nigerians, the lesson is clear: leadership is not about staying in power, it is about serving the people.

The same leaders who refuse to step down will never allow their own children to be denied opportunities.

Demand accountability. Support term limits. And never forget that true leadership is measured by service, not longevity.
