The decision, confirmed by FIFA in a statement on Sunday, September 6, 2026, comes despite significant backlash over his now-abandoned plan to bring private investment into FIFA competitions.
“The FIFA President announced in April that he will stand for re-election in 2027,” read a FIFA statement. “Of course, nothing has changed. Mr Infantino will be standing for re-election”.
The Private Investment Controversy
Infantino has been under pressure following his scrapped plans to sell stakes in FIFA competitions to private investment firms.
The plan sparked a global outcry, with European football’s governing body, UEFA, threatening to boycott all FIFA competitions, including the World Cup.
The backlash forced Infantino to abandon the proposal, but the controversy has lingered and could become a key issue in the upcoming election.
A Fourth Term Until 2031
Infantino, 56, first became FIFA President in February 2016, succeeding Sepp Blatter.
He was re-elected in 2019 and again in 2023. If re-elected in March 2027, he will serve until 2031.
