TEHRAN — The Indian Embassy in Tehran has issued its most urgent directive yet, advising all Indian nationals currently in Iran to depart the country immediately. Citing a rapidly “evolving situation” characterized by widespread protests and heightened security instability, the mission has told citizens to utilize any available commercial transport to return home.
The advisory, released on Monday, February 23, 2026, targets all Indian residents, including students, pilgrims, tourists, and business professionals. This escalation follows a series of increasingly stern warnings from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) earlier this year, including advisories on January 5 and 14, as the internal situation in Iran grew more volatile.
Escalating Tensions and Protests
The latest call for evacuation comes amid reports of fresh anti-government rallies at major Iranian institutions. Just yesterday, February 22, students at Sharif University and several other campuses held massive demonstrations to commemorate protesters killed in clashes last month. Reports indicate a heavy security presence across Tehran and Mashhad, with local authorities employing internet blackouts and “Sianat-2” oversight initiatives to curb the flow of information.
International observers have noted that the security environment is becoming increasingly unpredictable, with some nations citing the risk of arbitrary detention and potential regional military conflict as reasons for their own citizens to depart.
Emergency Protocols for Indians
The Embassy has outlined strict protocols for those still in the country:
- Documentation: All citizens and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) must keep passports and immigration papers on their person at all times.
- Registration: Those who have not yet registered with the mission are urged to do so via the embassy’s website.
- Family Support: In anticipation of further internet disruptions, the embassy has requested families in India to complete the registration forms on behalf of their relatives in Iran.
- Safety Zones: Citizens are advised to strictly avoid protest sites, monitor local media, and maintain a low profile.
Official Help Channels
The mission has established several emergency hotlines to assist with the exodus:
- Phone: +98 912 810 9115, +98 912 810 9109, +98 912 810 9102, +98 993 217 9359
- Email: cons.tehran@mea.gov.in
As commercial flight availability remains subject to sudden change due to potential airspace closures, the Indian government is prioritizing the safe and swift passage of its citizens before further escalations occur.
