NOA Condemns Brutal Mob Killing of Destitute Woman in Ilorin

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has strongly condemned the brutal mob attack at Ipata Market in Ilorin, Kwara State, on August 21, 2025, which resulted in the death of a destitute woman falsely accused of child kidnapping. The woman, reportedly struggling with mental health challenges, was mistaken for a kidnapper by misinformed community members who violently attacked her. Despite a swift police intervention that evacuated her to the General Hospital in Ilorin, she succumbed to her injuries.

The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the incident, emphasizing that jungle justice is a grave violation of the rule of law and endangers innocent lives. The police condemned the mob action, urging citizens to remain calm and law-abiding, stressing that security issues cannot be resolved through violence but through proper legal channels. The Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, appealed for public cooperation in reporting suspicious activities to law enforcement.

The NOA Director General, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, described the act as barbaric and opposed to national values and lawful conduct. The agency plans intensified public enlightenment campaigns emphasizing civic responsibility, conflict resolution, and trust-building in law enforcement. Community leaders and security agencies will collaborate with the NOA to curtail such incidents and uphold human dignity.

The victim, identified as Khadijah, was known to have battled brain illness and was impoverished, often begging for food despite support from her family. Her family has called on the government and security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent the recurrence of such tragedies.

This tragic episode reflects a worrying trend of mob violence fueled by misinformation and fear, with previous incidents in Kwara State targeting individuals suspected of child kidnapping. The call is for Nigerians to embrace empathy, patience, and to rely on constitutionally empowered institutions for justice to ensure public safety and uphold human rights.
