MANILA — Nigeria’s new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of the Philippines, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (Rtd.), has formally assumed his diplomatic duties, presenting his Letters of Credence to Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at the Malacañan Palace.
The high-profile presentation ceremony formally sets the stage for a renewed chapter in bilateral cooperation. As both nations look ahead to commemorating 65 years of diplomatic relations in 2027, President Marcos expressed deep enthusiasm for scaling up existing partnerships, placing special emphasis on energy security, economic expansion, trade, and strategic investment.
”There are many things that, in my view, we can explore and develop. There are so many opportunities that will be of mutual benefit to both our countries,” President Marcos stated, welcoming the veteran Nigerian envoy.
Conveying warm fraternal greetings from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Ambassador Ibas underscored Nigeria’s readiness to deepen cooperation across multiple fronts. Drawing from his rich background in strategic leadership—including his tenure as Nigeria’s 22nd Chief of Naval Staff and subsequent diplomatic service as Ambassador to Ghana—Ibas emphasized that security and economic development would remain central to his mission.
The extensive discussions between the two leaders spotlighted critical areas for immediate collaboration, encompassing oil and gas, agricultural innovation, defense, maritime security, and educational exchanges.
The historic accreditation event was witnessed by senior Philippine government officials, including Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro, alongside top-ranking officers from the Nigerian Embassy in Manila.
