Ibadan, Oyo State – A tanker carrying 33,000 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, exploded yesterday after its brakes failed, causing it to collide with other vehicles on the New Ife Express-Way at Celica Junction in Ibadan.
The incident, which occurred around 6:27 PM on Thursday, July 17, 2025, resulted in a massive fire. Despite the intensity of the blaze, authorities confirmed that no casualties were recorded.
According to Hon. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, Special Adviser to the Governor on Fire Service Reform and Agency Chairman, firefighters swiftly responded to the scene. A crew led by ACFS Adeniyi Adesina applied chemical foam compound, successfully preventing the fire from spreading to a nearby NNPC petrol station and surrounding properties. The Federal Fire Service also assisted in extinguishing the fire.
The explosion engulfed the tanker and one car, while a Jeep was pushed into a nearby gutter by the impact.
Director Operations Oyo State Fire Services Agency Engr. I.A. Adeleke, along with personnel from the Nigeria Police Force Egbeda Division, NSCDC, Amotekun, and OYRTMA, were on ground to provide security and traffic management.
Hon. Akinwande has assured the public that the fire has been completely extinguished and urged residents to continue their daily activities without fear.
