On Sunday night, Argentina’s icon and newly crowned World Cup champion Lionel Messi took to Instagram to celebrate his nation’s victory in Qatar and to thank his supporters, family, and nation, stating it was an incredible moment for him.
For the first time since 1986, when Diego Maradona captained Argentina to victory over West Germany, Messi led his team to victory over France in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final.
In a dramatic 120-minute encounter that finished in a 3-3 draw, the two teams battled it out to the very last second. France forward and star player Kylian Mbappe scored three goals in extra time to tie the score and force penalties, which Argentina won 4-2.
Messi, a seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, wrote, “CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD!!!!!!” in a moment of pure, unadulterated emotion as he celebrated the victory and his group. I wanted it so badly and had it in my dreams so many times that I still haven’t fallen. I’m in disbelief.
“I’m very grateful to my family, my supporters, and everyone who believed in us. We once again demonstrate that Argentinians can accomplish their goals when they unite and fight as one.
“We achieved it! ARGENTINA, DAMN IT, LET’S GO! We’re going to meet up soon.
Among the titles Messi has won are one FIFA World Cup, ten La Liga titles, eight Supercopa de Espana, seven Copa Del Rey, four Champions League titles, three FIFA Club World Cup titles, three UEFA Super Cup titles, one Ligue 1 title, one Trophee des Champion, one Copa America title, one Olympic gold medal, one Finalissima, seven Ballon d’Or awards (the most of any player), three times UEFA best player in Europe, and twice
Many consider Messi to be the greatest player to ever play the game.
