​Hidden Fortune: Deceased Beggar’s Room Yields Rs 8.4 Lakh in Sacks

​MANDYA — To the residents of Mandya, Noorunnisa was a familiar and tragic fixture—a frail woman roaming traffic junctions and sitting outside the local mosque for over forty years to collect meager alms. But following her death at her rented home, a startling discovery turned her neighborhood upside down: a hidden fortune tucked away in sacks.

​Noorunnisa, who was between 69 and 70 years old, passed away from natural causes. Her death went unnoticed for days until worried neighbors, realizing she had not stepped outside, raised an alarm. When relatives forced entry into her single-room home, they found her body.

​While cleaning the premises, family members broke the padlock to a private room that Noorunnisa had fiercely guarded for decades. Inside, they uncovered multiple sacks packed with a lifetime’s worth of accumulated coins and small-denomination currency notes (Rs 10, Rs 20, and Rs 50) alongside bank savings, totaling Rs 8.40 lakh.

​”We visited her occasionally to give her food and help her bathe,” said her nephew, Fairoz Ahmed. “However, we were completely unaware of the money she had accumulated. The room where the cash was found was always kept locked. She never allowed anyone inside.”

​As word of the hidden wealth leaked, wild social media rumors circulated online, falsely claiming her fortune exceeded Rs 1 crore. To quell the misinformation, the family turned the cash over to a local mosque for safekeeping and a transparent audit. Following a careful two-day count conducted in front of relatives, mosque officials verified the final amount.

​”The family entrusted us with the money. The counting was conducted strictly in front of the family members, and the total came to Rs 8.4 lakh,” confirmed Mukhtar Ahmed, vice-president of the local mosque. The mosque subsequently handed the entire sum back to the family, who announced plans to distribute the funds among needy relatives.
