LOS ANGELES — Academy Award-winning actor Halle Berry has fulfilled a mandatory court requirement by completing an online parent education program, marking the latest procedural step in an increasingly contentious custody battle with her former husband, Olivier Martinez.
Court filings obtained this week confirm that Berry signed a certificate verifying her completion of the Los Angeles Superior Court’s “Our Children First” mediation orientation and parent education program. Under local judicial guidelines, participation in the program is compulsory for litigants pursuing active custody or visitation adjustments.
The legal friction centers on the former couple’s 13-year-old son, Maceo. The dispute escalated sharply after Martinez filed petitions alleging that Berry physically assaulted the teenager during a disagreement over a virtual reality game. Martinez claimed the confrontation involved a physical altercation, prompting a Los Angeles judge to issue a temporary restraining order and adjust existing custody terms.
Berry has aggressively contested the allegations, characterizing the interaction as playful roughhousing that was blown out of proportion and maintaining that she never placed her hands around her son’s neck. Public defenders of the actor have submitted counter-evidence, and declarations from family members—including Berry’s 18-year-old daughter, Nahla Aubry—have surfaced in court defending Berry against accusations of domestic aggression.
Beyond the immediate altercation, the legal papers expose deep-seated disagreements regarding parenting philosophies and the management of their son’s developmental and emotional needs. Berry has accused Martinez of resisting professional guidance and failing to enforce proper boundaries, while Martinez’s legal representation maintains that his actions are strictly aimed at safeguarding the child’s welfare.
Despite the temporary protective restrictions limiting her contact, Berry retains final decision-making authority over Maceo’s education and mental health treatment. Both parties are scheduled to face off in a Los Angeles courtroom on October 16, where a judge will evaluate the temporary orders alongside cross-petitions for altered custody frameworks.
