Gridlock Grips Lagos-Ibadan Expressway After Early Morning Multiple Crashes

​Traffic along the critical Kara Bridge corridor of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway suffered a severe halt in the early hours of Friday following consecutive vehicular accidents on both the inbound and outbound carriageways.

​The initial incident occurred at approximately 12:05 a.m. on the outbound lane heading toward Ibadan. According to Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reports, the crash involved five articulated trucks and a Toyota Sienna, triggered by excessive speed and a subsequent loss of control. Seven adult males were involved, resulting in one fatality and an injury to another, while five individuals escaped unhurt. The severity of the collision left the deceased trapped beneath a heavily loaded truck, requiring heavy-duty recovery machinery to complete the extraction.

​While rescue operations were underway, a secondary crash struck the inbound lane toward Lagos at about 3:15 a.m. A Mazda commercial bus suffered a brake failure, leading to a lone crash that left the driver seriously injured. Emergency responders promptly evacuated the injured driver to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre.

​The Lagos Sector Commander of the FRSC, Kehinde Hamzat, expressed condolences to the affected families and urged motorists to exercise patience while traffic management teams work to clear the obstruction. Authorities have advised commuters traveling from Lagos to Ibadan to divert via the Ikorodu-Sagamu route, while those heading toward Lagos are encouraged to utilize alternative corridors such as the Lekki-Epe Expressway or the Ikorodu-Sagamu Expressway to bypass the gridlock around the Kara-Ojodu Berger axis.
