Ghana Deports 68 Foreigners, 42 Nigerians Lead List Over Crimes ​

Ghana’s Ashanti Regional authorities have deported 68 foreign nationals convicted of serious crimes, with Nigerians forming the largest group at 42 individuals. The operation targeted offenses including prostitution, fraud linked to the Q-Net scheme, and other criminal activities, following court rulings that ensured due process. Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene announced the action on his Facebook page, highlighting the Ghana Immigration Service’s (GIS) role in enforcing laws while respecting human dignity. ​

Amoakohene detailed the breakdown: 13 Cameroonians, seven Beninese, three Ivorians, and three Burkinabé nationals joined the deportees, all repatriated to their home countries. He commended GIS for its professionalism and collaboration with courts and security agencies, stating it bolsters public safety and protects vulnerable people in the region. This marks a firm stance on organized crime amid Africa’s push for freer border movement. ​

The incident reflects broader scrutiny of Nigerians abroad, as seen in recent Indian raids arresting about 50 on drug and money-laundering charges. Ghana has history with such actions, including a 2020 deportation of over 700 Nigerians for similar crimes. No immediate response has come from Nigerian officials, but the event underscores rising regional tensions over cross-border offenses.
