In a rapidly evolving global digital landscape, Nigerian-born academic Professor Abejide Ade-Ibijola has emerged as a formidable force, shaping the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its applications across the African continent. Currently a Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Applications at the Johannesburg Business School (JBS), University of Johannesburg (UJ), Prof. Ade-Ibijola’s career serves as a beacon for African scholars in STEM leadership.
Rising to the rank of Full Professor at the University of Johannesburg, his journey is characterized by a blend of rigorous academic excellence and a deep-rooted commitment to social impact. His inaugural address in April 2024, titled “Mind, Heart, Grenade: A Story of a Career of Innovation,” highlighted his mission to move beyond theory to solve real-world problems through technology.

Transforming Tech Education
Central to his impact is the founding of GRIT Lab Africa, a pioneering initiative that has trained over 3,000 young Africans in programming, AI, and entrepreneurship. By fostering a culture of “grit” and technical proficiency, the lab has helped achieve a 100% employment rate for its graduates, equipping them to navigate the challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
His work is not confined to the classroom. With over 80 proprietary technological tools to his credit, Prof. Ade-Ibijola has developed innovative solutions ranging from AI-driven educational platforms to VR-based legal training environments—the latter of which earned the “African Tech Innovation of the Year” award in 2024.

A Global and Continental Influence
Beyond his tenure at UJ, Prof. Ade-Ibijola holds distinguished visiting professorships at Woxsen University in India and the University of Kigali in Rwanda. His expertise is frequently sought by international bodies, including the World Bank, where he has served as an advisor on big data frameworks.
As he continues to push the boundaries of Natural Language Processing and AI algorithms, his focus remains clear: building an inclusive digital future for Africa. “This milestone is not just a personal achievement,” he stated, reflecting on his career trajectory. “It is a call to action to use AI to solve real African problems and to build the next generation of researchers who will lead globally”.

Through his research and mentorship, Prof. Ade-Ibijola continues to ensure that the continent is not merely a consumer of foreign technology, but a hub of indigenous innovation and digital transformation.
