A 15-year-old student has lost a hand after picking up a police grenade during escalating school protests in France.

The teenager was injured in Lens as demonstrations by secondary-school students over classroom conditions entered their third week. The incident has intensified scrutiny of the confrontation between protesters and police, with rights groups questioning the use of force during the unrest.

HOW THE INJURY HAPPENED

The teenager reportedly picked up a grenade deployed during clashes with police. The device exploded, causing severe injuries that resulted in the loss of the student’s hand and part of the lower arm.

The incident occurred against the backdrop of nationwide demonstrations over school conditions, including concerns about overcrowding, insufficient resources and shortages of teachers.

PROTESTS SPREAD ACROSS FRANCE

Hundreds of schools have been affected by the demonstrations, with students blocking or disrupting school activities in different parts of the country.

The protests have also produced clashes, injuries and property damage. French authorities have faced pressure to restore order while addressing the concerns that prompted the demonstrations.

QUESTIONS OVER POLICE TACTICS

The teenager’s injury has intensified scrutiny of police tactics. Rights groups have accused security forces of excessive use of force, while authorities face the difficult task of maintaining public order during increasingly confrontational protests.

The incident does not by itself establish whether the police action that preceded the injury was unlawful, and investigations will be required to establish the precise circumstances.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the injury has transformed an already tense education protest into a wider debate about policing, youth safety and the use of crowd-control equipment.

Whatever the political disagreement behind the protests, a 15-year-old losing a hand is a stark reminder of how quickly confrontations between young demonstrators and heavily equipped security forces can produce irreversible consequences.
