The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has officially suspended the enforcement of the vehicle tinted glass permit policy following a Federal High Court order. SP Josephine Adeh, the command’s spokesperson, announced the suspension in an interview, explaining that the decision came after the police received the court’s directive to halt enforcement pending final judicial determination. The court order arose from a legal challenge contesting the legitimacy of the tinted glass permit enforcement, issued by the Federal High Court in Warri, Delta State.
SP Adeh emphasized the police’s commitment to respecting the judiciary and assured that enforcement activities would remain suspended during the ongoing legal proceedings. She reiterated that the tinted glass policy was instituted purely for security reasons, addressing concerns that criminals exploited vehicles with darkened windows to evade identification during illicit activities. Adeh clarified that the police are not the lawmakers but merely enforcers of the regulation, which aims to bolster national security.
The tinted glass permit regulation, which mandates vehicle owners to acquire official permits for tinted windows, faced resistance and sparked controversy since its implementation earlier this year. Opposition to the policy led to the court injunction, which commands the police and Inspector-General of Police to maintain the status quo until a verdict is reached. Meanwhile, the police confirmed that all permit fees are paid directly into the Federal Government’s Treasury Single Account, dismissing claims that enforcement was a revenue-generating exercise for the police.
The suspension applies nationwide, and the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to adhering to the judicial process and awaiting the court’s ruling on the matter.
